TEACHERS:

 Angeles Veron - Albano Goldenberg

The themes:

The series will be composed of 8 classes which can be taken consecutively or can be used to create a special series by choosing 8 class topics based on the interests of the community organizer or student group.

The classes:

Will be an hour and fifteen minutes long.  For this reason it will be important to start on time.  Students should enter into the Zoom Meeting at least 5 minutes prior to the start time to ensure a good connection.

The format:

We will use Zoom Meetings.  Students will be able to connect to the classes using the provided meeting number and password.  This meeting number and password will stay the same throughout the entire series.

Recommendations:

The cameras should be on during the classes to facilitate feedback from the instructors.  Microphones should be silenced to avoid distracting noises.  Should the students have any questions, the microphones will be opened.

The cost:

The cost of the seminars is $120 per person early bird and $140 per person 7-days or less advance for Themes A & B.  The price for Theme C is $150 per person early bird and $175 per person 7-days or less notice, as there will be live music in several of the classes.    Payments are accepted through PayPal using debit cards or bank transfer.  There is a 25% discount for the second person in a couple ($90 early bird & $105).  The prices are in the local currency (US and Canadian dollars)

After payment is received, the Zoom Meetings meeting number and password will be sent.

  Themes:

 A)  Embrace and Connection

These classes are focused on the loveliest part of tango, the embrace.  These classes have been developed for all levels of dancers.  Through this series, new dancers will be introduced to the basic concepts of Argentine Tango.  For more advanced dancers, this series will review fundamental concepts in detail in order to apply them to their dance or to teaching.

 1) Introduction to the axis of the body, weight changes and walking in tango

In Argentine Tango, rebounds function not only as a way to change the direction but also as a tool to express the music.

A) We will use Gyrokinesis and proprioception exercises.

2) Rebounds and changes of direction

Although the basis of Argentine Tango is the caminata, or walk, pivots are an integral part of tango used to change directions and to form the basis of many sequences.  This class will focus on the possibilities of pivots up to 180 degrees.

A) Weight change exercises, the use of different dynamics to change the direction with the music

3) Pivots

One of the most commonly used figures in Argentine Tango is the giro.  In this figure both dancers are able to show the best of their skills as long as the base figure has been developed and practiced.  In this clase, we will develop the techniques used in the linear giro as a basis for later application in the circular giro.

A- Dissociation exercises for perfect ochos

4) Introduction to linear giros and molinetes

In this class, we will explore the possibilities of the caminata, or walk, and the relationship between the bodies in the couple to begin to create our own figures and sequences.

5) Practice and Exploration: We will demonstrate the basic step, study the parallel and cross systems of walking, and the other role

Argentine tango is actually three different rhythms.  One of them is milonga.  In this class we will introduce the three types of milonga and explain the musical differences between the types.  Then we will apply this knowledge to the dance.

6) Theory and Practice: Traditional milonga.

Argentine tango is actually three different rhythms.  One of them is Vals.  Based on European music, in the area around the Rio de la Plata, Waltz becomes Vals.  Although the music uses the same rhythmic base, Vals sound very different from European Waltz.  In this class we will begin to explore Vals.

7) Theory and practice: The different cadences of vals

8) Review and practice.  This class will be a summary of all of the concepts covered in previous lessons allowing for questions and in-depth practice.

 B) Spirals, Circles, and Expression:

The classes in this theme will be focused on using spirals to generate movements.  These classes have been developed to be useful for all levels of dancers.  Through this series, new dancers will be introduced to circular concepts of Argentine Tango.

For more advanced dancers, this series will review fundamental concepts in detail in order to apply them to their dance or to teaching.

In Argentine Tango the communication in the couple takes place in the embrace which has a circular shape.  As a result, the energy in the couple takes on a circular shape traveling through the arms and torso.

 1)Tango and Spirals

A- Introduction: Gyrokinesis exercises working seated

B- Use of the back, the torso, and the arms in tango

C- Introduction to circular movements

Changes of direction and rebounds using spiral movements

In this class we will combine linear rebounds with circular energy to begin to form spiral shaped movements.

 2) Changes of direction and rebounds using spiral movements

In this class we will combine ochos with circular energy to begin to spiral shaped movements.

Exercises to work dissociation within the ochos to find the possibilities of pivots over 180 degrees.

 3) Pivots and their possibilities

A) Exercises to work dissociation within the ochos

One of the most commonly used figures in Argentine Tango is the giro.  In this figure both dancers are able to show the best of their skills as long as the base figure has been developed and practiced.  In this clase, we will develop the techniques used in the circular giro.

 4) Introduction to circular giros and molinetes

In this class we will focus on how we can learn new movements, energies, and sequences.  Using videos of the most revered milongueros, we’ll study different styles of movement from the maestros.

5) Theory and practice - emblematic milonguero movements: Eduardo Pareja, Carlos Gavito, Julio Balmaceda y Pibe Avellaneda.  We’ll watch videos of the maestros

In this class we will explore the application of spiral energy ro create new possibilities in the form of boleos and ganchos.

6) Introduction to boleos and ganchos

7) Using the pendulum and spiral movements in milonga and vals

8) Review and practice.  This class will be a summary of all of the concepts covered in previous lessons allowing for questions and in-depth practice.

 C) Musicality and dynamics :

In this series of classes we’ll explore the three tango rhythms in depth.  We will see how we can use basic figures as a basis for our expression.  For a more fruitful and enjoyable experience, a majority of these classes will include the participation of live tango musicians.

1) Drills to improve connection and density for musicality

This class is focused on understanding the texture of Argentine Tango music.  We will explore the rhythm and different types of melodies.  We will use this knowledge as the starting point of our expression.

2) Theory and practice

A) Rhythm and melody

This class is focused on understanding the texture of Argentine Tango music.  We will explore the different forms the rhythm can take in Argentine Tango.  We will examine the marcato en 4, marcato en 2, the 3-3-2, syncopations, and arrastres (drags) in detail.

3) Theory and practice

A- Syncopations and arrastres

In this class we will apply the knowledge from previous classes to understand and explore the difference in the textures of the music of the orquestras of Juan D’Arienzo and Carlos Di Sarli.  We will work on movements for the pauses, the marcato en 4, and the variacion.

Musicality exercises for Juan D;Arienzo and Carlos Di Sarli

 4) Analysis of different typical orchestras:

A) Musicality exercises for Juan D;Arienzo and Carlos Di Sarli

In this class we will apply the knowledge from previous classes to understand and explore the difference in the textures of the music of the orquestras of Julio De Caro and Osvaldo Pugliese.  We will work on movements for syncopations, the 3-3-2, and the arrastres.

Musicality exercises for Julio DeCaro and Osvaldo Pugliese

 5) Analysis of different typical orchestras:

With live musician

 6) Theory and Practice: Traditional milonga, milonga campera, candombe

With live musician

 7) Theory and practice Vals

Different rhythms (1-2-1) (1-3-1)

8) Review and practice.

This class will be a summary of all of the concepts covered in previous lessons allowing for questions and in-depth practice with live music.

Complementary topics
